One thing which is becoming clearer over time is that you can't really have software freedom unless you also have hardware freedom. That applies especially to things like phones, but also Intel ME and similar. So the free software foundation might eventually become the free technology foundation.

Also if you consider the industry trends with Moore's law on silicon hitting the buffers more of the software is going to be baked into the hardware. That was a theme at one of the recent ARM conferences.
