The main problem is not so much difficulty as a combination of inertia and commercial interests. It's easy to see how client/server with its bottlenecks and points of control serves commercial interests far better than p2p. Hence I think it's very unlikely that the well known companies will enthusiastically adopt a distributed internet which leaves them with less power. But maybe big companies are just not needed, or money can be obtained in different ways (by selling FreedomBoxes, maybe). The internet existed before Google and it will presumably continue to exist afterwards.
