Haldane points to an inspiring teacher at University that made him want to be a physicist. Notes that these ideas have been brought into my own field, particle physics, as a new way to explore ideas about subatomic fundamental physics https://chirp.cooleysekula.net/attachment/16625 -

Haldane wrote in one of his papers in the 1980s that his "model was a nice toy model" - a consequence of quantum mechanics that was neat but with no clear application at the time. He is confident that materials science has caught up to this idea and will make concrete realizations in storing or passing information based on how light can travel in different ways around the system without disruption. -

The #NobelPrize is for theoretical discoveries that are deep and beautiful, and have been confirmed experimentally. The applications are coming in the future, perhaps in electronics, new materials, and even quantum computing designs. -

Today's #NobelPrize Texas-themed analogy: "You cannot have half a tornado". Vortices in material form in pairs at low temperature, but at high temperature they become separated - a topological phase transition. -

Totally digging the bagel/pretzel topology discussion by the expert on this field. Can't make a new hole without breaking the material in some way. Now I am hungry. -

David J. Thouless (U. Wash), F. Duncan M. Haldane (Princeton), and J. Michael Kosterlitz (Brown U.) earn #NobelPrize for theoretical discoveries of topological phase transitions and topological phases of matter. A recognition of theoretical developments needed to understand and design novel materials. https://chirp.cooleysekula.net/attachment/16620 -
