Meet the Author

Lewis Carroll
Lewis Carroll
It's possible that if Lewis Carroll had never met Alice Liddell, he might have enjoyed a more peaceful lifetime and an obscure legacy. But his whimsical inventiveness touched everything he did, and a story he made up one afternoon for a little girl became one of literature's great classics, Alice in Wonderland.

Biography

Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, known by his pen name, Lewis Carroll, was a man of diverse interests -- in mathematics, logic, photgraphy, art, theater, religion, medicine, and science. He was happiest in the company of children for whom he created puzzles, clever games, and charming letters.

As all Carroll admirers know, his book Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865), became an immediate success and has since been translated into more than eighty languages. The equally popular sequel Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There, was published in 1872.

The Alice books are but one example of his wide ranging authorship. The Hunting of the Snark, a classic nonsense epic (1876) and Euclid and His Modern Rivals, a rare example of humorous work concerning mathematics, still entice and intrigue today's students. Sylvie and Bruno, published toward the end of his life contains startling ideas including an 1889 description of weightlessness.

The humor, sparkling wit and genius of this Victorian Englishman have lasted for more than a century. His books are among the most quoted works in the English language, and his influence (with that of his illustrator, Sir John Tenniel) can be seen everywhere, from the world of advertising to that of atomic physics.

    Fabulous

I bought this for my 9 year old daughter and she absolutely loves it. She hasn't even read the main stories yet; she is too busy reading the rest of the goodies. My husband is even reading it when he is allowed to borrow it. The book cover is gorgeous and is a keeper to be passed down to future generations.

The gold flakes off the book and sticks to your skin. Otherwise it's an entirely beautiful piece. Also upset about the book being printed in China. I'm worried that some people may get injured by these books from the gold dust. I held the book under a bright light and riffled the pages and saw millions of tiny sparkly flecks dancing in the light. I'm very concerned about the quality of this product.

I received this an The Chronicles of Narnia for Christmas, which is fabulous since I asked for them. I can't wait to add some of the other books to my collection. I was surprised when I opened Alice in Wonderland, and had to investigate online.. it seems as though my copy is an anomaly because the entire inside of my book is upside down. I thought maybe it was supposed to be this way since it's Alice in Wonderland, but I guess it has nothing to do with the rabbit hole haha.

A Handsome Volume for an Unbelievable Price

This is the first of the leatherbound volumes by B&N that I've purchased and judging by this one, probably not the last! I have begun to collect Alice in Wonderland editions and I purchased this one because it offered so much more of Carroll's work as well as the original Tenniel illustrations. But the format of the text is also very appealing (font is not too small or too large, margins are generous all around) and the cover design, over and beyond the sumptously stamped pink leather cover,is just gorgeously conceived. Gilt edges, bound bookmark, extensive range of author's work and you have one terrific buy at under $20--hard to believe. My one hope is that the paper, which is ivory in color and a good weight, is acid free and will stand the test of time. Don't mean to be greedy, but I'd like to keep this one forever. Not all the leatherbound volumes I've looked at in this series appear to have paper of the same quality.

This is the first Barnes & Noble Leatherbound Classic book I

This is the first Barnes & Noble Leatherbound Classic book I have read, and judging by only the cover, it's absolutely astounding. Cute and pink with wonderful artwork, and pages dipped in gold which gives the pages that ''old'' vintage feeling!
The first two parts of the book is of course the Alice books - I finished those in a day each, it was wonderful reliving my childhood, and also learning more about the books, as the Disney and Tim Burton movies are just mere interpretations. I loved the books even more!
The next two parts are the Sylvie and Bruno books, which were wonderful and cute! Really recommend those if you like the Alice books, but are heavier to read as they are longer and with no pictures – So I wouldn’t really recommend it to a younger child.
But the fun doesn’t end here! There’s LOTS of other goodies to discover. Verses, puzzles, poems, stories, and a big ‘’miscellany’’ chunk with lots of fun stuff! There are even mathematical problems and equations or those who are smart enough! Riddles and guides are also included.
So if you’re a fan of Mr. Lewis Carroll and Victorian literature, get this book at once! At only $18, it’s even worth it if you just buy it just to read the Alice stories! Here in Norway they sell some books from the Leatherbound Classic series for a whopping $41.50 each! I bought this and another book from the series, and with shipping the total was only $54.50! So I will continue ordering from Barnes & Noble in the future! Hope to collect all the books one day.

Beautifully Bound Book with Captivating, Original Illustrations

This is an absolutely gorgeous book. The books of this series are all professionally bound and illustrated with either the original artwork or something equally as thrilling. The pink cover of the Alice in Wonderland edition is a nice refreshing change from the droll brown, blacks or blues of a traditionally bound book. Definitely worth giving as a gift or keeping as a collectors item as this will last generations. Absolutely worth the exceptional price as I would have been willing to pay double what they asked (though, at the price offered, I was able to buy both quantity AND quality...). This book (and all of the leatherbound classic series books) is certainly a treasure.

This book cover is the best beautiful among this classic leather- series. It's really gorgeous. But when I got this book, I found that illustrations can be only found in first story, Alice's adventures in wonderland. I'm a little dissapointed. And my book was sent with slight damage. I think wrapping was careless. (I'm not in US, I ordered the item by international airmail.)

Book cover is spellbinding, starstruck by its beauty...

Let’s be real, this book will take forever to finish. Well, at least for me it will. I really enjoyed the story of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass and am still working my way through the other fabulous tales. Honestly, the main reason I bought this book is because the book cover is just so spellbinding. When we made eye contact, I was starstruck by its beauty and, out of no where, found myself paying for it to become mine. It really does have great stories but if you don't finish it, it definitely is a lovely addition to your book collection.

Loved the leatherbound version and the color and character featured on the cover.

Alice in Wonderaland or Alice thru the looking glass is one of my favorites. This book did not disappoint. I bought it because of the leatherbound version . I have purchased other special leatherbound books offered by Barnes and Nobles. If you like the classics and want to ad a special version this book is for you.

I also recommend the DVD version's of this story.

    Alice's Adventure in Wonderland

A great book for young and old alike. I love the whole look of the book starting with the thick leather bound hard cover and beautiful drawing and design on the front cover. Along with the two books of Alice in Wonderland, this edition also has, Sylvie and Bruno, Sylvie and Bruno Concluded, The Hunting of the Snark, Phantasmagoria, College Rhymes and Notes by an Oxford Chiel, Three Sunsets and Other Poems and much much more. Beautiful illustrations of John Tenniel have been retained in this edition. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves books as much as I do.

    Amazing!

If you are a true Alice in Wonderland you will love this edition to your collection of AIW paraphernalia. It has a really great cover and the the inside is very pretty. I also love the fact that it is "...and Other Stories" because now you get to read all of the less popular stories by the great Lewis Carroll. Enjoy! :D

Absolutely fantastic. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass have become some of my most favorite of stories. They are written so beautifully. Carroll writes with such  a "matter-of-fact" attitude that perfectly captures the innocence of childhood. I absolutely love it. Wonderful to think it was written so long ago and is still so entertaining. Imaginative and exciting. Highly highly recommend. A treasure to have in my personal library.

The novel is composed of twelve brief chapters; it can be read in an afternoon. Each of the brief chapters, furthermore, is divided into small, individual, almost isolated episodes. And the story begins with Alice and her sister sitting on the bank of a river reading a book which has no pictures or dialogue in it. " . . . and what is the use of a book," thought Alice, "without pictures or conversations?" Thus, we find many pictures and read much dialogue (although very little of it makes sense) in this novel.

After introducing us to one of the creatures in Wonderland, the Gryphon, for instance, the narrator tells us, "If you don't know what a Gryphon is, look at the picture." As noted earlier, Wonderland is filled with strange animals, and Alice's encounters with these creatures, all of whom engage her in conversations, confuse her even more whenever she meets yet another inhabitant of this strange country.
