WinXP is popular for embedded systems. It's likely the manufacturer of your hospital's X-Ray machine hasn't been updating the OS, but doctors still need to access the images across the network. So, it's susceptible to the #WannaCry ransomware. And the X-Ray machine is proprietary hardware, so there's no chance of upgrading to !FreeSoftware OS.

@thebestsophist @pettter I'd be perfectly happy to shut down all the machines - maybe especially so in mission critical environments - that run insecure proprietary software in order to build it all up from scratch using !fs.
Given how neither of these systems we talk about have more than a couple of decades history - rebuilding them can be done within all of our lifetimes.

I think you're right in that some soul is lost. Anything which grows too much will fail as a community.
