sure Debian is much better than Ubuntu. And no comparison indeed. Try running Ubuntu on #N900. I assure you Debian Lenny runs without issues -

in 12 yrs of using gnu/linux, many distros, I have found #Debian easiest to install and upgrade !debian using it for 4 yrs now. -
