I'll bet your phone's GPS works fine when you're out of cell coverage, but it's just the map tiles don't update. You need an off-line map for your GPS app; I recommend OsmAnd http://osmand.net/ if your phone is an !Android -

@mcscx try resstoring the .android_secure folder form your backup . this is where android stors apps on the SD card. -

@mcscx if you can mount the Sdcard on a laptop as a harddrive (rather then MTP access) you can chkdsk/fsck it which might fix the problem -
